Horizons Atlanta is an academic enrichment program designed to promote the potential of a diverse population of public school children from economically disadvantaged families. The program emphasizes academics, the arts, sports, swimming, and social growth, while seeking to positively affect students' attitudes toward school and working to prevent a decline in academic skills over the summer. Students generally enter the program after they complete kindergarten and return each summer for nine consecutive summers. Holy Innocents' Episcopal School in Sandy Springs hosts the program and provides in-kind classroom space and access to other facilities on campus.
The Horizons Program began at New Canaan Country School in New Canaan, Connecticut in 1964. In 1993, Horizons at New Canaan received a grant to grow the program to a new location. Now there are 13 affiliates across the country. By 1997, Horizons National Student Enrichment Program, Inc. began operation under its own 501 (c)(3). The National Horizons office provides affiliates with technical assistance, seed money, philanthropic guidance, and assessment tools for program evaluation.
